• Spill Information Guide

Under CoSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) there are a range of substances regarded as hazardous to health including: Substances or mixtures of substances classified as dangerous to health under The Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations 2009. This Spill information guide helps remind viewers the steps required when dealing with hazardous spills.

The sign states:

Protect: Evaluate the material spilled and / or identify the source. Wear / use the appropriate protective clothing / equipment for the situation. If the source or the substance is not identifiable, assume the worst.

Contain: Seal drains and contain the substance using appropriate spill control consumables such as absorbent socks and booms. Close valves, rotate punctured drums and plug leaks where it is possible and safe to do so.

Clean Up: Clean up the spill with appropriate absorbents and thoroughly clean tools and reusable items and store for the next use.

Dispose: Absorbent materials take on the characteristics of whatever they absorb. Dispose of used absorbents and spilled liquids in accordance with current legislation.

Report: Where required report the spill to appropriate external authorities and always review, report and apply learning within your own organisation.

Biological agents, bacteria and other micro-organisms directly connected with work, such as farming, sewerage treatment, healthcare, or where exposure is incidental (e.g. exposure to bacteria from an air conditioning unit that is not properly maintained). Any kind of dust, if its average concentration in the air exceeds levels specified in COSHH. Any other substances which create a risk to health, but which for technical reasons may not be specifically covered by CLP including: pesticides, medicines, cosmetics or substances produced in a chemical process.
